Forum: GratefulDead Subject: 8/14/71 ("burning crater of my mind")

37 years ago tonight:

This is a little treasure! The entire show is dynamite, Phil is in the zone, and the sound/mix is A+ perfect!

Don't miss this typically scorching 1971 Other One -> Jam -> Other One, complete with a really beautiful early MLB segment (think DP #2)...

"Listening now to the Truckin>Other One>Jam. Wow. the boys are in Berkeley and preaching to the choir. They blast out of the gate like it's 1969, then space it out to mellowville with Jerry leading the way with sparkling jazzy non-wah riffs. Do you hear the China Cat theme halfway thru? Quickly morphs into a prototype MLB jam before turning dark and modal again then thundering back to the verse. Definitely "burning crater of my mind" territory!
Two discs of pure Dead Magic. Highly recommended.
enjoy,"

Thank you sir. I am of the opinion that most of this material got perfected just about 1 year later. Been stuck in fall 1972 for about a month now. Seems like a good one though, and I can't get a H2H, BB Man, or Charlie in late 72. Thanks, it's going on tonight.

Cliff ... i am more partial to Other One's from early '70 or of course '68-'69 (who wouldn't be, lol!), but oddly enough don't think i've ever listened to 8/14, must check it out on your recommendation, bookmarking it now; thank you sir!

This is indeed a fine little show...so soon after the So Cal shows, often over looked...I have enjoyed it for some time.

Good to see you CLIFF. Stick around. Please.

sound is excellent, commercial quality (at quick's site as well).

the TOO/jam/TOO is fantastic. the jam isn't the '73 type MLB, but a pure pleasure to listen to nonetheless.

great show.

thanks Cliff.

I agree with that, this is one of the sweetest Other Ones of '71!

I know I'm probably a bit late on this thread.
I have to concur fully with Cliff on this one -

Phil well up in the mix and playing well too.

I really, really like Uncle Johns Band and Sugaree from this show a lot.

What is there not to like about 1971 ?

Stephanie

Coming off the longest break they had taken in their career, it is amazing how well the Dead performed over the summer. Too bad so many tapes are missing or lost--but it's a bonus when one turns up. 8-26-71: Empty Pages and the last H2H followed by another long break and Pig's medical hiatus. Many of the new tunes were being worked up at this time as Bobby promised
that the next visit would see a new set list. Indeedee.
